Lizzie Calligas / Metoikesis

Photographs by Lizzie Calligas in the old Acropolis Museum solidify and record – with the artist’s idiosyncratic artistic gaze - a transitional condition: the vacuum of what has become a non-functional space, which is transformed from a permanent exhibition environment into a place for recording, packaging and temporarily hosting the valuable works of ancient sculpture that will be undergoing special procedures at the hands of experts, in order to be transferred safe and sound to the New Acropolis Museum. The place is transitional, the moment is a boundary. The corpus of the sculptures is transformed, as each is clothed in protective white coverings, while the game of shading enriches the semantic content of the dressed forms.

The exhibition, curated by Syrago Tsiara, Director of the Contemporary Art Center of Thessaloniki, along with art historian Christina Petrinou, is produced by the State Museum of Contemporary Art.
