THE SILENCE - Evanthia Tsantila

Dates happen: 17/11/2007 ... 30/11/2007 Evanthia Tsantila
“The Silence”
17- 30 November

The elemental fluidity of time and space is at the heart of “The Silence”, a work inspired by the Ingmar Bergman film for which it was named. Evanthia Tsantila’s installation, a large construction incorporating two videos, will be on display November 17-30 at the Contemporary Art Centre of Thessaloniki (Warehouse Β1, Port of Thessaloniki), as part of the 1st Thessaloniki Biennale of Contemporary Art, in association with the upcoming 48th Thessaloniki Film Festival.
Born in Thessaloniki in 1963, Evanthia Tsantila lives and works in Berlin. Of “The Silence”, curator Jan-Erik Lundstrom said that “What is generated – through two videos, a soundtrack, a space/architecture/objects - is essentially, between the two protagonists, the breakdown of communication, a caesura, a slippage, a time warp, a point of no return and yet without a specified future”
SMCA Director Maria Tsantsanoglou explains: “Evanthia Tsantila’s “Silence” is rooted in the film by Ingmar Bergman, and specifically in the scene where the two sisters quarrel in a hotel room. The flare-up was apparently sparked by rivalry over a lover, but anyone who has seen the film knows that the underlying reasons are both multiple and complex. Any work of art can, of course, be read on many levels. Some of these can be interpreted, some call up associations, some speak to the emotions and some leave their mark directly on the subconscious. Evanthia Tsantila makes no attempt to interpret, but seeks rather to penetrate some of those levels, through a formalistic intervention into the familiar scene. She reverses the sexes, converts the exchange of words into one of glances, abolishes sequency through an intermeshing of expectation and recollection, youth and age, explains that Silence conceals within itself a deafening noise, and emerges again at last presenting a work renewed and purified of its cause of strife, a work that has made one small step towards redemption”.
